This is a personal preference; there is no wrong way to do this; the effect is slightly more polished looking when etching from the back side, but not by much.

The tape method was much more complicated and inconsistent. While it did work, any changes in the density of the wood veneer caused the laser to engrave through the tape, compromising stability. Additionally, the tape's lack of rigidity made positioning the veneer harder, and finishing was far more labor-intensive. This new method eliminates all these issues. The aluminum is more rigid, allowing for better alignment; it cannot be engraved by the laser, unlike the tape, which makes alignment and cleanup much faster. As a result, this method improves detail and total process time while improving the fine details, making the updated method far more reliable for consistent production.

This process will not work with a fiber laser; the fiber laser wavelength will not work with wood.

Trotec lasers do not typically use the Lightburn software; for support on this question, contact a LightBurn forum or the LightBurn software company.

Laser foil is not the same as hot stamping foil; laser foil is a polyester adhesive-backed foil designed for the laser industry.

Jasper Stone can be laser processed, and the response will engrave white like most stones.

The system is only designed for print and cut. Print and engraving have not been a feature that was requested as the images are already printed, so unfortunately, that process will not work with the print and cut camera. However, without the Vision Design and position camera, it is possible to position an engraving visually into any printed product.

This process should work; however, the depth and detail must be kept within certain limits. Excessive detail may cause the process to fail, so I would advise some testing on some scrap materials to find your limits.

@@TrotecLaser As an alternative, would precious metal (e.g., gilding), with or without a spray adhesive allow better preservation of embossed details. Would you follow that with an epoxy topcoat to increase durability?

I have tried this, but it is far more complex. Gilding is more of an art form, and it takes practice. The laser cannot cut real metals, so it would have to be completed by hand into the engraving with a mask down into the engraved material surface. And yes, it needs to be clear-coated for protection.

You are correct; vinyl is corrosive to the machine when laser cut, but it is NOT vinyl. It is made from polyester specifically for lasers.

Laser beams are not perfectly straight. They diverge in the shape of an hourglass until they reach the focal point, and because of this, there is a very slight angle only really noticed when cutting thick parts. In this example, that small amount of divergence, when engraved as a positive and negative, fills in any gaps or kerf, and this benefits us by giving a flush finish with this kind of detail.

Thank you. All processes were completed with a CO2 laser.

This material becomes more robust with time. After a few days, it is bonded tight and becomes very challenging to remove from any smooth surface, including smooth surface leather. As I said in the video, adding a clear sealant will improve durability, but this was not shown in the video on the leather. However, note that this is a "surface material," making it less durable than a paint fill or just engraving it. Because of this, it is more prone to scratching and damage.

The X-tool may be able to do this, but they will need a 3D mode or relief mode.

This should work, but I do not use a blue diode laser. Contact X-tool to be sure.
